NFL Challenge 2007

Congratulations to Roxie Rocca on capturing his 3rd NFL Challenge Title in the last 5 years. Roxie swept the board this year similar to his 2005 run, taking the cash for the regular season and staying hot to take the Title in the playoffs. Roxie cleared $385 for his efforts.

Roxie put up a solid 7-4 record (64%) in the playoffs, below his unprecedented 10-1 showing in the 2005 playoffs, but above his 6-5 record in the 2003 playoffs. Roxie played the new playoff format to perfection, hitting his top 3 plays (15* with NY Giants – NFC Championship, 12* with San Diego – AFC Championship and 9* with San Diego – Divisional Playoff) and wrapped up the Title before the Super Bowl by sweeping the Conference Championship weekend. He finished with 68 points (6-5 in over/unders) and was the only playoff contender with a winning percentage over 50%.

Rounding out the competitors were Zip in 2nd place (45 total points, 5-6 overall, 8-3 over/unders), BD in 3rd place (44 total points, 5-6 overall, 4-7 over/unders) and Montross (41 total points, 5-6 overall, 7-4 over/unders).

In 2007, the TF Group voted in a new playoff system which adds a rating system and over/unders to the playoff mix.  It was another successful season for the NFL Challenge, and probably could go down as the greatest regular season finish in the history of the TF Group.

New Playoff System

Gentlemen,

It is with great pleasure that I unveil the first version of the NFL Challenge Playoff System.

In designing the system, I tried to incorporate all areas that a Capper must master to be worthy of being called a Champion. These include not only picking winners, but also running a solid money management system as well as being able to understand the flow of games and pick over/unders.

The playoff system will be based on a 100 point scoring system, broken down in the following way:

1) 22%, or 22 points, will be based on over/unders. For each of the 11 games in the NFL playoffs, competitors will take the over or under in each game and score 2 points for each correct pick.

2) 78%, or the remaining 78 points, will be based on picking teams to cover the spread and allocating a ranking to each game (money management). With 11 games in the playoffs, the rankings will be 3, 3, 5, 5, 5, 7, 7, 7, 9, 12 and 15. Players will be allowed to use each of these rankings only once. If the player wins the game, they will get the points they assigned to that game, otherwise, they will get zero points (you don't get negative points if you lose a game)

3) We will continue to put a point total on each game and the PVS calculation will be used for tiebreaker purposes only.

There it is, max points is 100. The competitor after the super bowl who has the most points wins the Championship.

Games Points %

1 3 3.0%
2 3 3.0%
3 5 5.0%

10 12 12.0%
11 15 15.0%

Let me know what you think or any changes you might want to make... we'll have comments for the next week and then vote on the system next week.

Reversal Plays - All the same (ATS): 0-0
Reversal Plays - 1 different (1D): 0-1

LL jumped out to a an early lead in the 2007 NFL Challenge --- putting up a solid 11-5 record and locking down the first cash of the season. Zip Zalapski and Montross Montessi, both of whom are out of the game this year, put up 10-6 records to stay close to the leader. BZer went with the ALLFAV offense to go 9-7, which would have match the HOME-Team offense had he gone his usual route.

Defending champion BD Copson came in at 8-8 but I think he will take that given upside he had in Buffalo!! Rock, Bubz and Esta round out the pack, looking up at the leader board.

Dues are $105, I'm suggesting we just square up at Super Bowl with the final tallies so we don't have to worry about weekly payouts.

Our first reversal play lost this weekend, as the only 1D reversal lost on Chicago.

No shortage of controversy early in the season for the TF Group. BD Copson neglected to put in picks this week but went 10-6 and tied LL for the week with all the away teams. BD took a 5 spot from LL with a PVS of 6 for the week vs LL's 10. The year end pott grows from $160 to $190 with the tie. Fortunately for BD, there was no vote in the off-season on a "no pick week." There was talk that a no pick week would result in the worst score of the week minus 1 (which would have left BD at a 2 win week), however, the item was missed for the voting session at TankFest VIII. LL continues his torrid start to the season, hitting for 10 wins for the second consecutive week.

Montross Montessi, by virtue of his 9-7 week, sits just two back of LL in the season standings. A surprising start for Zip Zalapski, 8-8 this week, just 3 back of the lead. Bubba hit for 8 wins, 46.9% for the season, and is still within striking distance at 6 back of the leader. Roxie has been un-roxie-like this season, hitting for only 6 wins this week.

Esta Carrier continues to struggle this season, with only 3 wins, and just 9 on the season, Esta's winning percentage is just 28.1%. A similar tough week for BZ, with his FAVoffense leading to just 3 wins. Favs were 12-3, with an unbelievable 7 doggies winning outright on the field.

Like we said last season, play those doggs on the money lines if you can!!

REVERSALPLAYS

Another week of no picks by a TF member and the same result, another solid week. Roxie missed the deadline but tied for the top spot this week with a 10-6 showing with all the away teams. LL remains on fire this season with another 10 week win at 10-6. He took a $5 spot from Rock and Zip by hitting the over/under right on the number. We still have to check the history books, but it looks like LL set a record with his 3rd consecutive week with 10 wins or more vs the spread. Zip Zalapski continues to stay hot on LL's trail, however, sitting just 3 games back even though LL has jumped out to a 31-17 record.

BD and Bubz came in just a game shy of the top at 9-7. BD stays in the playoff hunt at 4 back, while Bubz continues to improve with 7, 8, 9 wins in the first 3 weeks of the season. Esta finally got out of his slump with a 9-7 record and moved out of the cellar at 13 off LL's pace. The other non-gambler in the group, Montross, went 50% to stay in 3rd place for the season.

BZer followed last weeks 3 win week with a 5 win week and falls into last place at 14 back. Looks like BZ chose the wrong time to go on an east coast voyage. He will have a lot of ground to make up when he returns to the familiar confines of good ole Schwagawam.

Reversalplays continue to struggle as 1D reversals went 1-2 with losers on BALTIMORE and CHICAGO and a winner on TAMPA BAY.

The year-end carry-over grows by $25 to $215

Small week this week with only 13 games and, as a result, not alot of movement on the leader board. Roxie was able to take a $5 spot from Esta on the tiebreaker, hitting the number spot on with 41. Both Esta and Rock went 8-5 on the week and tightened up the race for a playoff spot. Esta has recovered from a very slow start and now sits just 3 games back of the final playoff spot. Roxie has had a slow start as well, but he sits just 1 back of BD for the fourth and final playoff spot. Coming in at 7-6 were Zip and Montross to maintain their hold on the 2nd and 3rd playoff spot. Zip picked up a game on LL and sits 5 back off the lead. The rest of the 4 competitors came in at 6-7 (BZer, LL, BD and Bubba). LL has cooled off, as he now he is now walking down the stairs with the last four weeks coming in at 10,9, 7 and 6.

Overall, the standings have tightened up from a few weeks ago. As the bottom four competitors are 6 games are less from a playoff spot with plenty of time left in the season.

The Year-end pott grows by $30 to $275. Remember, all dues will be paid at the Super Bowl this year.

REVERSALPLAYS:

1D ReversalPlays went 1-2 this week with a winner on CAROLINA and two losers on DALLAS and SEATTLE. That takes the reversals to an unimpressive 4-6 record.

Finally a little shake-up in the standings this week. Rock and Zip were all square when the dust settled in week #7, both hitting for 8 wins and each having 48 points for a tiebreaker. They both take back their $5 spot and the year end pott grows by $30 to $305. It was the 2nd week in a row that Roxie tied for the top spot and pushed his season record to 52-51, just over 50%. More importantly, it was enough to get him back into the playoff picture, jumping into 3rd place by besting MM on PVS for the 3rd spot. Zip Zalapski was able to pick up 1 game on LL and pulled to within 4 games of the leader.

LL remains solid at the top going 7-7, with a season record of 60-43 (58%) and continues to set the pace since week 1. With a 3-11 record, BD's mid-season slump continues, as he falls out of the playoff picture and into 6th place. BD has hit for a total of just 14 wins in the last three weeks (34%). Esta continues his ascent back towards the playoffs with a 7-7 week. Since starting the season with 6 and 3 week wins, Esta hasn't fallen below 7 wins in the last 5 week. Coming up on the mid-point of the season, Esta seems to be right where he needs to be to make a second half charge.

Coming in at 6-8 were BZer and Montross. Montross continues to struggle, hitting for only 6 wins 3 out of the last 4 weeks, and falls to 4th place, with just a 3 game cushion on his playoff spot over Esta. BZer can't seem to get his game going this year, as he moved out of the cellar but still sits 7 back of a playoff spot.

Finally, Bubba is clearly off his game this year, hitting for 6 wins or less in the last 4 weeks. With just 4 wins this week, Bubz drops into the cellar, 16 games off the lead and 8 games out of the playoffs.

REVERSALSPORTS

1D ReversalPlays went 1-1 this week, moving to 5-7 on the season with a winner on KANSAS CITY and a loser on PHILADELPHIA.

2 weeks to go to the Poker Challenge III, still looking for players, round 'em up where you can.... and somebody have a talk with Too Hotty!!!!!

More of the usual this week, as there was not alot of movement on the leader board. 6 out of the 8 players came in above 50% on a short week(only 13 games). LL and BD returned to form this week, hitting at 9-4, tieing the week with LL picking up a $5 spot by 1 point with the low in PVS. The year end pott grows by $30 again to $335. With his solid week, BD jumped over Esta and moved back into 5th place, sitting 2 games back of the 4th playoff spot.

Coming in at 8-5 were Zip and BZer. LL picked up a game on Zip this week to push his 1st place lead to 5 games. BZer still sits 6 back of the playoffs but it was a step in the right direction as BZ had hit for just 6 wins each of the last 2 weeks. At 7-6 were Rock and Montross, our 3rd and 4th place competitors. Rounding out the group were Esta and Bubz. Esta finally cooled off after a solid run to get back in the playoff picture the past few weeks. This week's setback puts Esta 4 games back of a playoff spot. Bubz continues to struggle this year, hitting for 6 wins or less the last 5 weeks. At 9 games back of the playoffs and 9 weeks to go, Bubz needs to get going before it is too late.

We agreed to have a new playoff system in place by mid-season and I will send around a proposed solution in the next week for a vote or adjustment.

REVERSALPLAYS
Our second All The Same (ATS) play was a big loser on INDIANAPOLIS, bringing the season record to 1-1

We had 1 winner on our 1D game on NEW ENGLAND, looks like everyone is trying to reverse the Pats blowout pattern... to no success, bringing 1D picks to 6-7 on the season.

Poker Challenge III this weekend, looking forward to seeing everyone!! Still room if we can round up a couple more players.

Week 9 Recap     back to top

LL

Roxie walked away with the cash this week after putting up a solid 9-5 week which saw 5 out of the 8 competitors hit for less than 50%. Roxie's effort pulled him within 4 games of the leader LL. BD hit at 7-7 this week and hopped over Monty to get back in the playoff picture, while BZer's 7-7 showing pulls him to within 4 games of a playoff spot.

Overall, the standings tightened up a bit as the top of the standings struggled a bit this week. This helped Esta and Bubz, as they both hit for 6-8. Zip followed with a 5-9 week, but was able to pick up two games on LL and now sits just 3 back of LL. Montross's trip to the east coast didn't help his cause, coming in at 4-10 and falling into 5th place.

The big story of the week is LL 'Paperbon' Ligenza, who made a critical mistake in missing the deadline for picks. This time, the away teams were not very nice, as LL hit at just 3-11 and saw his first place lead shrink to 3 games.

I will put out a proposed playoff system this weekend for discussion and vote.

REVERSALPLAYS

1D plays went 1-0 with a winner on NY JETS, taking the season record to 7-7.

Thanks again everyone for coming out to the Poker Challenge III, as you all know, I had a great time!

After 9 straight weeks of leading the pack, LL has finally been overtaken. Zip Zalapski came out of the gates 8-0 at the 1 o'clocks and sat at 11-1 after the 4 o'clock games. Zip finished up the week at 11-3, which was good enough to take the cash. It was Zip's first cash in the NFL Challenge since the 2004 season, if you can believe that, which I'm sure most of you can. Zip now sits 2 games up on LL, as he he had 5 games different from LL and won all 5 to move from 3 back to 2 ahead.

At 9-5, Montross got back into the playoff picture "hopping" right back over BD like BD had done to him last week. BD managed a 7-7 showing during a tough weekend in his overall finances. Following at 6-8, were LL, Bubba, and Esta. LL stumbled a bit this week, as it looks like the shock of a 3-11 showing from all the away teams last week has not yet worn off. Bubba's 6 win week now puts him in range to get on the TankFest Group record books. The all-time "consecutive weeks with less than 8 wins versus the spread" is 8 weeks (held by Zip in 2005). Bubba is now at 7 weeks and will tie Zip if he fails to hit the 8 win mark this upcoming week. After a strong charge by Esta in weeks 3 through 8, he has cooled off with 3 consecutive weeks at only 6 wins. He currently sits 5 back of a playoff spot, well within his reach.

BZ and Rock round out the pack at just 4-10. Rock remains in the 3-spot and his league leading PVS of 61 coud come into play at the end of the season. BZer is battling with Bubba for the cellar, sitting 8 back of the playoffs and needs to get the OFFENSE going if he wants to have a chance at making the playoffs.

The NFL Challenge Playoff System is out for debate. We like to hear the debate from all competitors. We need to vote on a new playoff system or default to the existing system. We'll vote next week on implementing the proposed solution.

Carry over remains at $335.

REVERSALPLAYS
No ReversalPlays this week, they stand at an even 50%, 1-1 for ATS plays and 7-7 for 1D plays.

Bubba finally got a wake up call this season, in the form of possibly matching one of the worst records in the history of the TF Group. BD made the call after last week's Tuesday night report and Bubz delivered, hitting at 12-4 and taking the cash. Bubz' 12 win week is the highest total this season. The strong week might have just saved Bubz' season, moving from the cellar up to the 6th spot and he now sits just 6 games back of a playoff spot. After making the call that Bubz would be lights out this week, BD followed his lead and trailed by just 1 win at 11-5. BD's strong week helped him 'bunny hop' Monty and Roxie to get back into the playoffs. He now sits just 6 back of the leader. BD is looking to become the TF Group's first back-to-back NFL Challenge Champion.

Following Bubz and BD were Zip and Roxie at a solid 8-8 in the first 16 game week we've had since the 3rd week of the season. Roxie fell 1 spot to number 4 in the standings but maintained a playoff spot and has a 2 game lead on Montross. Zip held the top spot for the 2nd week in a row and was able to extend his lead to 4 games over LL as LL struggled for the 3rd consecutive week, coming in at 6-10. Also coming in at 6-10 were Esta, BZer and Montross. Montross fell out of the playoffs with the weak showing while Esta hit for only 6 wins for the 4th consecutive week. Esta drops to 7th and puts his playoff chances in jeopardy. Things have tightened up in the standings, but at 10 games back of a playoff spot, BZer's chances of making the playoffs are starting to fade.

With just 6 weeks to go, it is time to start tracking the PVS... LL jumped to the front of the pack with a differential of 2 this week.

Things got a lot more interesting in Week 12, as the top competitors struggled and the playoff hopefuls shined. After 4 straight weeks with 6 wins, Esta exploded for 11 wins and took a $5 spot off of Bubz with the lower PVS. Bubz continued his hot streak though, following his 12 win week last week with 11 this week (23-9, 72% in the past 2 weeks). More importantly for Esta and Bubz is that a spot in the playoffs is now well within reach, as Bubz sits 3 back and Esta just 4 back of the 4th and final playoff spot.

Coming in at 9-7 were Rock and Monty. Rock moved past BD into 3rd place, maintaining a spot in the playoffs, while MM moved to within 1 game of the playoffs. Monty has quietly hit for 9 wins in 2 out of the last 3 weeks to stay in the hunt for a playoff bid. BZer came out with the ole HOMETeam offense, but that couldn't get things started for him, hitting at just 7-9. Zip maintains his place atop the leaderboard with a 7-9 record and extended his lead over LL by 1 game, who came in at 6-10. After leading the league for the first 8 weeks of the season, LL has been unable to hit for more than 6 wins in the past 4 weeks. BD also struggled this week, hitting at 6-10, but it was just good enough to hang on to the final playoff spot.

The 2007 NFL Challenge is shaping up to be one of the most exciting finishes in the history of the TF Group. With 5 weeks to go, only 6 games separate 2nd place from 7th place. With a full slate of games each week for the rest of the season, there is sure to be some changes atop the leaderboard in the weeks to come! Good luck to all club members.

The year end pott grows by $30 to $365.

Things didn't just tighten up in the standings, they also did in the PVS. In last place last week, Zip and BD took a shot on making up some ground, going with 25 and 31 points, respectively. With a 3 point total last night, only 17 points now separate the top from the bottom, down from 31 last week.

We're witnessing a bit of history in the NFL Challenge in 2007. After staring down the worst record in the league (consecutive weeks below 8 wins), Bubba has been nothing short of spectacular the last 3 weeks, hitting at 37-11, for a whopping 77% winning percentage. Bubz is re-writing the TF Group record books right in front of our eyes. His 14 wins in a single week sets a new record, beating Esta's 13 win week set in 2006. Bubba also becomes the first player ever to hit for 11 or more wins vs the spread in 3 consecutive weeks, beating Esta's 2006 record of 3 consecutive weeks of 10 or more wins.

Records aside, Bubba made an unprecedented jump from 6th place to 2nd, trailing our leader by Zip by just 2 games. Just 3 short weeks ago, Bubz was in the cellar, shining up the golf clubs for the off-season, but now he is in prime position to take the regular season title for the 2nd consecutive year. Finally, his 14-2 record this week was plenty good enough to take the cash for the week.

It was a tough week for the rest of the pack, as the remaining 7 competitors failed to hit for more than 50%. LL and Rock hit at 8-8, which helped their playoff chances. LL picked up 2 games on the leader and sits 3 back -- the 8 wins were much needed after LL put up 4 straight weeks of 6 wins or less. Rock moved to within 4 games of the leader, as he has been rock-solid the last 8 weeks with only one hiccup in week 10 (4 wins). Rock holds the 4th and final playoff spot and widened his lead over the next competitor to 3 games.

At 7-9 were Esta and Montross. Esta fell to 6 games back of the final playoff spot and will need to do better than 7 wins a week to get into the playoff picture with just 4 weeks to go in the regular season. Montross remains in 5th place but lost ground given the numbers the playoff contenders put up. Rounding out the pack were Zip, BZer and BD at 6-10. Zip's poor showing really tightened up the picture for the regular season title worth $90 at this point in the season. BD hit for only 6 wins for the 2nd week in a row and fell out of the playoffs, from 4th place to 6th. BZ may have to think about re-building for next season, as he put up his 5th consecutive week below 8 wins. Will he challenge Zip's record of 8 weeks, we will see over the next 3 weeks.

No ReversalPlays this week, interestingly we haven't had one for 3 weeks. 1D are 7-7, ATS are 1-1

Year-end pott is $365 ($90 regular season, $275 for champion)

What a race we are witnessing in 2007!!! Can you feel the excitement, the rush of a big week???? The pain of being on the wrong side of a blooooooow-out... the heartbreak of falling out of the playoff picture???? To top it all off, your new leader of the 2007 NFL Challenge in Week 14 is none other than Montross Montessi. One week after Bubba shattered Esta's single week win total of 13 wins, Montross comes right back the following week and tied him with 14 wins. Montross's spectacular week took the cash, but more importantly pushed him from 5th place to 1st. With a 3 way tie atop the leaderboard, Montross's PVS of 120 beats Zip's (139) and Bubba's (150). Right behind Montross was BD at 13 wins. Like Montross, BD's solid week moved him from 6th to 4th, right back into the playoff picture!

BZ was next in line at 10-6, finally breaking the streak of consecutive weeks below 8 wins. BZ benefited from a week in which favs were an unusual 13-3. Coming in at 9-7 were Bubba, Rock and Esta. Bubz was able to move into a tie for the overall lead and match Zip's 2004 record of 4 consecutive weeks of 9 wins or better. He remains red-hot, extending his 4 week record to 46-18 (72%). Roxie actually fell out of the playoffs even though he put up 9 wins and closed the gap on the leader. Although he is just 2 games off the lead, Roxie would be out of the playoffs if the season ended today. With 5 players within 2 games of each, all fighting for 4 playoff spots, someone will be on the outside looking in when the dust settles. Its put up or shut up time... 3 weeks to go, 48 games to pick... 24-24 just might not be good enough to get you into the show! Time will tell who will rise and who will fall.

At the bottom of the pack for the week was Zip at 7-9 and LL, a miserable 4-12. Both were in the playoff race last week, only one remains in the playoff picture today, however. Both Zip and LL are struggling at the wrong time in the season. Zip has hit for 8 wins or less the last 4 weeks and has seen his 5 game lead on the pack 2 weeks ago evaporate into thin air. LL's struggles have been far worse. After leading the league for the first 9 weeks of the season, he has hit for 6 wins or less in 5 out of the last 6 weeks. If we rewind to week 9, it all began when LL forgot to put in his picks and hit for only 3 wins with all the away teams. LL falls from 3rd to 6th and is 6 games back with 3 weeks to go.

REVERSALPLAYS
We had our first ReversalPlays in a few weeks.... 1D plays went 2-2 with winners on DETROIT and HOUSTON and losers on San Fran and Kansas City. 1D plays stand at 9-9 for the season while ATS plays are 1-1

Week 15 Recap     back to top

Montross (playoffs)
Rock -3 (playoffs)
Bubba -3 (playoffs)
BD -5 (playoffs)
Zip -5
LL -7
Esta -12
BZer -20

Who does Montross Montessi think he is? Our LCSN (Loser's Club Sports Network) analysts believe that no TF Group member has ever won the cash 3 weeks in a row (still researching, but we do know that MM and Esta won the cash in 2 consecutive weeks in 2006). Monty will attempt to set one of the most prestigous records of the TF Group this upcoming weekend. Records aside, MM went 11-5 and may have just punched his ticket to the post-season. After matching Bubba's 14 win 1 week record last weekend, this weekend Monty will also try to match Bubba's latest record of 3 consecutive weeks with 11 or more wins against the spread. We are witnessing a re-writing of the record books in 2007!!!!

Prior to this weekend it was a 6 man race to the post-season, but with 2 weeks to go, it looks like we're down to 5 competitors fighting for 3 playoff spots. BD made the call last week: '24-24 gets it done for the top 5' That looks like it will be correct. After 5 out of 6 weeks with 6 or less wins, LL finally put up a good number this week (although it didn't seem to help with man)... putting himself into position for at least a chance at a playoff spot. LL went 10-6 and sits just 2 back of the final playoff spot. Also hitting at 10-6 was Roxie. Roxie was the big mover this weekend as he jumped up to 2nd place (swapping places with Zippy -- 5th to 2nd) and continued the trend of a big changes atop the leaderboard. Roxie sits just 3 back of Monty and takes 2nd place on PVS over Bubba. With his recent solid run, Roxie is not only thinking about making the playoffs, but also about becoming the first TF Group member to hold 3 NFL Challenge Titles (currently Roxie is the only competitor with 2 NFL Challenge Titles).

Bubba put up a solid 8-8 this week, hitting at 50% for the first of the final 3 weeks and meeting the BD's call of 50% for a playoff spot. With their stellar weeks this week, both Rock and Bubba have tied the record for 5 consecutive weeks of 8 or more wins against the spread. Will either of the competitors break the record that was previously set in 2003 by LL and matched by MM in 2004? Stay tuned. Bubba is finally staring to come back to earth though (8-8 this week). After an unprecedented run to rise from the cellar over the past 5 weeks, he is still hitting at 54-26 (68%) over that same 5 week period.

Trailing the rest of the pack were the c-no Twins, BD and Esta at 7-9. BD continues to cling to that last playoff spot, sitting 5 back and taking the 4th and final playoff spot on PVS over Zip. Esta sits 7 back of the playoffs and will need a near miracle to make the playoffs. Rounding out the TF Group was BZ and Zip. BZer has hit for 7 or less wins for 5 out of the last 6 weeks --- and at 20 games back of the lead and 15 back of the playoffs, he becomes the first player eliminated from the playoff picture. BZer has 2 weeks to win some cabbage and avoid being the next victim of a season with 'no cabb'. Zippy becomes the latest leader to fall out of the playoff picture (following LL last week). Over the last 5 weeks, Zip has hit for less than 8 wins the last 4 weeks and has seen his 5 game lead on the pack vanish into a current 5th place showing. The positive news, Zip is still tied for 4th in the win column (5th place on PVS) and has 2 weeks left to make a run!

The all-important PVS

119 Esta
120 LL
125 Montross
135 BZer
139 Rock
143 BD
155 Bubba
156 Zip

Year-end pott
Pott remains at $365, with $90 for reg season champ and $275 for the Champ.

ReversalPlays
1 ReversalPlay this weekend, winner on OAKLAND, which takes the 1D Reversals to 10-9 on the season.

Playoffs
The new playoff system passed, one addition to the rule is that if a player puts in a rating that is not available (ie, player already used their 12 star play but entered it for a game), then the rating will drop to the next lowest rating. If there are no lower ratings, the player will be given the next highest rating (if you enter 3* on the web but have no 3* left, your play will move up to a 5* rating if you haven't used all 5*)

Good luck next week!

Week 16 Recap     back to top

Rock (playoffs)
BD 0 (playoffs)
Montross -1 (playoffs)
Zip -1 (playoffs)
LL -2
Bubba -2
Esta -8
BZer -17

Its put up or shut-up time... it all comes down to the last 16 games of the regular season. This year's NFL Challenge has been like no other in the history of the TankFest Group. Everytime it looks like someone is going to take control of the regular season or anytime someone seems destin for a playoff spot, the standings take a drastic change. Here we are, on the eve of the final week of the season, and 6 competitors are all in the hunt for the regular season championship and even more important, a playoff spot to go after a TF Championship. With 6 club members all within 2 games of each other, Week 17 should be nothing less than spectacular. However, Week 17 will be a major test to all players and it will take exceptional capping to put up a good number in a week where some teams may show up and some may not. Our LCSN analysts have put out some 'magic numbers' for each competitor to make the playoffs:

Rock - 7 wins (current first place and solid PVS, 5 or 6 wins and he'll need some help)
BD - 8 wins and he's in (weaker PVS than rock, 7 and just a little help should be plenty)
Montross - 8 wins (solid PVS, 7 might be enough)
Zip - 9 wins (PVS hurts him, 7 or 8 wins and he'll need some help)
LL - 8 wins (leader in PVS could get him into the post-season, 7 wins doesn't get it done)
Bubba - 10 wins (PVS hurts him, 8 or 9 wins this week and he'll need some help)
Esta - 12+ wins and lots of help

On to the standings... LL was able to take a $5 spot from BD on the PVS tiebreaker this week as both players hit for a solid 10-6. LL seems to be finishing the season the same way he started it -- with a 'run' of 10-win weeks. LL started the season with three 10-win weeks and has now put up a 2 consecutive 10-win weeks. However, his recent 'run' (20-12, 63%) hasn't been good enough to get him back into the playoffs as he still sits 1 back of the playoffs. The good news is that LL is heating up at the right time of the year and also holds the best PVS of the group. BD's 10 win week propelled him from 4th into a tie for first with Roxie but his PVS trails Roxie by 13 points, and as a result, BD drops to 2nd place. We'll have to wait until next week to see if BD's call of 24-24 was good enough to get into the playoffs.

At 9-7 were Zip and Esta. Esta has been putting up solid numbers the last 5 weeks (43-37, 54%) but has been unable to recover from 4 consecutive weeks of just 6 wins. Esta will need a perfect storm to back his way into a playoff spot. Zip finally turned in an above 8 win week and it was good enough to get him back into the playoff picture (this after some heavy tearing after losing the Thursday night game), tying Montross for 3rd place, but dropping down to 4th based on his horrible PVS.

Next up is Roxie and BZer at 8-8. The 'Mr Consistency' Award goes to Roxie as he breaks LL's (2003) and Montross's (2004) record of 5 consecutive weeks of 8 or more wins vs the spread. With 6 consecutive weeks of 8 or more wins, Roxie becomes the latest leader of the pack, taking the lead on PVS over BD. BZer seems to have shut it down for the season, putting it on auto-pilot and going with the HOMETeam Offense.

At the bottom of the pack were 2 club members who had been tearing it up as of late. After 5 weeks above 8 wins (including a record for 3 consecutive weeks at 11 or better and the record for single season week wins with 14), Bubba hit at 6-10 (going 4-10 on Sunday after starting the week 2-0) in one of the most important weeks of the season. Bubba drops out of the playoff picture after the poor showing, sitting 1 back of Zip and Montross. Like Zip, Bubba's PVS is out of this solar system and they will both need a solid week next week to ensure their playoff hopes don't rest on their PVS. At the bottom of the pack was Montross at 4-12. It seems as if the pressure of trying to become the first competitor ever to take the cash in 3 consecutive weeks was just too much for Montross. After looking like he had secured a playoff spot and creating some separation at the top last week, MM gave it all back this week (just like after a big week with the man). He now sits 1 back from the top spot BUT also just 1 game above falling out of the playoff picture.

Good Luck in Week 17 everyone! I was going to see if Esta had the NFL Network to watch the Pats game on Saturday night but it looks like CBS or NBC will now be carrying the game. If anyone still wants to get together to watch the game, let me know, I will be in the 'Wam. More importantly, what is the GP for tomorrow night (Thursday)???? Anybody up for a trip to the c-no or how about a high stakes poker game? I can see if the Bannish's are available? T-Bonnet?? What do you say?

Week 17 Recap     back to top

Rock (Regular Season Champ)
BD -2 (playoffs)
Montross -3 (playoffs)
Zip -4 (playoffs)
LL -6
Bubba -6
Esta -11
BZer -18

Congratulations to our 2007 NFL Challenge playoff contenders: Rock, BD, Montross and Zip. In what was the most exciting NFL Challenge in the history of the TF Group, the final week experienced no changes on the leaderboard. The four finalist will battle for $295 and more importantly, a coveted TF Group Championship. For the record, Roxie was 29-19, BD 26-22, Monty 24-24 and Zip 23-25 over the final 3 weeks of the season.

Constantino Rocca continued his hot streak, finishing strong at 11-5 and taking the cash for Week 17 as well as a $100 pay check as the Regular Season Champ. Roxie extended his current record of consecutive weeks of 8 or more wins vs the spread to 7 weeks and ended the season at 135-121 (52.7%). Roxie will be going for an unprecedented 3rd NFL Challenge Championship and has history on his side -- as he has won every other year with victories in 2003, 2005 and now possibly 2007.

In 2nd place is BD Copson, hitting for 10 and 9 wins the last 2 weeks to secure his playoff spot. As defending champion, the Big Dogg looks to become the first competitor ever to win back-to-back NFL Challenges. BD will have to do battle in the playoffs with a new playoff system to win again, a system that he has repeatedly thrown out jabs about his disapproval. BD was hot or cold during the season, matching the low with only 3 wins in week 7 but also hitting for 10 or more wins 4 times during the season.

In third place is Montross Montessi, finishing the season with a solid 9-7 record in Week 17. Monty was able to survive a 4 win week in week 16 to get into the playoffs. This will be Monty's 4th time in the playoffs in the past 5 years, however, in Monty's previous 3 trips he has not finished better than 3rd. Monty's highlight of the season came in Week 14 when he tied Bubba's record of 14 wins.

In the 4th and final spot is Zip Zalapski. Zip may have hit his first ever 4 team parlay to back his way into the playoffs. Zip was mathematically eliminated after the 1 o'clock games until Seattle grabbed the back door for him with a TD with 54 seconds remaining. That gave him a glimpse of hope, needing Balt, Arizona, KC (or if the Jets won, the total to be over 23 points to beat Bubz on PVS) and finally, Indy. Zip felt like he was back in the game this week as his stress level was the highest its ever been on a Sunday afternoon since last season. With a Championship, Zip will become the 2nd TF Member to have won all 4 majors (joining Esta).

For those not playoff bound, it is time to look forward to the March Madness Tournament. LL and Bubz gave it all they could in the last week but could not move up in the standings, while Esta and BZ had some tough stretches during the season that they couldn't recover from. LL went 27-11 (solid 'run' but not enough), Bubz 21-27, Esta 24-24 and BZer 24-24 over the last 3 weeks.

LL's 7-9 record in Week 17 just wasn't enough to get him into the playoffs. It was a disappointing end to a season in which LL lead the NFL Challenge for the first 9 weeks of the season. LL forgot to put in his picks in Week 9 (3 wins) and then hit for 6 or less wins 4 out of the next 5 weeks following that misstep. LL's playoff hopes went down to the last series of the season but the Titans were unable to overcome a key turnover in their own end to cover the spread for him.

Bubz also hit for 7-9 this week, which wasn't enough to move up. Bubz overcame a period in which he went 7 weeks with less than 8 wins but comments from the BD woke up the sleeping giant mid-season. Bubz went on a 5 week tear to get back into the playoff picture, but a 6 and 7 win week in the last 2 weeks were Bubz final downfall. Bubz can look back on 2007 as a positive season, though, as he set the record for consecutive weeks of 11 or more wins at 3, tied Esta's record for consecutive weeks of 10 or more at 3, tied Zip's record for consecutive weeks or 9 or more at 4 and set the record for single week wins at 14.

Rounding out the pack were Esta and BZ. Esta struggled early in the season with a 6 and 3 win week and then 4 consecutive weeks in the middle of the season with only 6 wins. Likewise, BZ couldn't find his rhythym with any offensive scheme, either the ALL FAV or HOME TEAM, recording 6 wins or less for almost 50% of the weeks in the season. BZ finished the season on a positive note, however, hitting for 10 wins in 2 out of the final 4 weeks.

For the non-playoff competitors, the cash figures are final: Esta (-95), BZer (-95), LL (+10), Bubba (-25)

PLAYOFFS

For any non-playoff club member who would like to test out the new playoff system, feel free to put in your picks over the web. You will not be able to view them on the web (for now) but I will pull them off the database each week until I have time to build a new web page.

For playoff contenders, all weekend picks are due before the kickoff of the first game on Saturday (4:15pm)

Web is updated, let me know if you have any questions on the new system.

REVERSALPLAYS

1 Different (1D) ReversalPlays finished the season strong, going 3-1 in the final week with winners on NY GIANTS, WASHINGTON and DENVER and a loser on Buffalo. The 1D plays finished at 15-11 on the season.

All the Same (ATS) plays finished the season at 1-1.

1 Roxie $385

3 BD -2 $(95)

7 Esta -11 $(95)

Zip went 1-2 on his top plays, losing his 15 and 12 star. BD went 2-1 on his top plays, missing the 15 star while stuggling on his over/unders. BD continues his trend of putting up solid numbers in the NFL Challenge, making the playoffs the last 3 years, with the 2006 Title to show for it. Monty put up the donut on his top 3 plays and turned in another disappointing playoff run. Monty has made the playoffs 4 out of the last 5 years only to finish in 4th three times and 3rd one time.

It was another successful season for the NFL Challenge, and probably could go down as the greatest regular season finish in the history of the TF Group. Next stop, the first step in the Grand Slam, the 2008 March Madness Championship!

TF Group Update

NFL Challenge Dues: As far as I know, BZ, Zip and BD have paid their dues. Get the rest to Roxie as soon as you can (LL needs 10). Monty, get a check in the mail!!!

The Poker Playoff V never took place in 2007, rather than canceling the tourney and leaving the record books blank for 2007, we will look to have two tournaments in 2008.

March Madness – at the 2007 TankFest Tournament of Champions, we voted in a new scoring system for the March Madness tournament, to reward winning with underdogs. Like the NFL Challenge, we will need to finalize the new point system. Please send your suggestions to the group, we should finalize and vote by the end of February.
