NFL Challenge 2004

For the second consecutive year, the NFL Challenge was decided at the Super Bowl.  Congratulations to Esta Carrier on a fine season and a spectacular playoff run.  Esta was crowned our 2004 NFL Challenge Champion after a 30 yard TD pass from McNabb to Lewis cut the lead to 3 points with 1:55 to play.  Zip Zalapski had been riding high after a 22 yard FG had put the Pats up by 10 with 9:21 to go.

Zalapski hit his last 6 games to to tie Carrier going into the Bowl, but riding the Pats at 7- seemed to cost him a shot at the title.  It was the third consecutive year Zip made the playoffs but could take the title.

Larry Legends and Montross Montessi season was cut short as they fell behind and were knocked out on Conference Championship weekend.  MM took the regular season title and put up a solid showing with his second consecutive playoff showing.

In 2004, the TF Group went new age by beginning to enter picks through the web.  The process caught on quickly and worked well, however, the 2pm Friday deadline started to get abused.

In the end, Esta takes his second consecutive TF Group Championship and is halfway home to the unofficial Grand Slam.  Congrats once again!

Esta Carrier comes out blazin' and takes the cash and an early 4 game lead.
All the focus was on Roxie last year as being the only competitor not to
have a championship.  Now that Roxie has joined the club with the NFL 2003
Championship, our eyes now look to Esta Carrier as the only member not to
have a "solo" championship.  His only Championship to date is a co-champ
with MM in TF II.  I think Esta has made a statement that this will be his
year.

Bubba, Zip and Montross come in at 8-8 and remain in contention.  BD, BZ,
Rock and LL have some work to do.......

On a Technology note.  We will begin this week by submitting picks on
ReversalSports this week.  Now I won't have to chase anybody down, worry
about missing games, worry about people not having the spreads, or worry
about typing in picks in wrong.  All the responsibility will fall on each
competitor!!!!    Once all competitors have submitted their picks through
the web, I will pull all picks from the web, copy and paste it into the
spreadsheet and send it out on Fridays.  I will send out the links to
submit your picks on Thursday after I have posted spreads Wednesday night.
Let me know if you have any problems.

Week 3 Recap    back to top

Standings have really tightened up.  Esta Big Pop has fallen out of the
playoffs with 2 consecutive 10-loss weeks

BZ and MM are tied, BZ takes the top spot with the better PVS

Zippy couldn't close the door on Monday night and LL came in and grabbed a
$5-spot on the points.  $30 carries over putting the year end pott at $190.

Reversal Plays go Ofer2 this weekend after sweeping the board last week
1 Diff:  losers on Cincy, Det (5-3 on the season)

last year reversal plays hit a 50% so it maybe worth while to note when to
do a double reversal.   With 1 diff plays at 5-1 it may have been a good
time to do a double reversal as you would expect the record to be closer to
50% at the end of the season....  food for thought

Roxie took the cash against Zippy by hitting with KC.   Look at Roxie's
PVS...... 7 point variance over 4 weeks??  That is unheard of, he has had
variances of 0, 3, 3, and 1.  The guy is dialed in and that PVS may be the
difference when he makes his run at the playoffs.  Zip couldn't pull the
cash in on Monday night for the 2nd straight week, losing both nights.

After taking over first place last week, BZ came in with a dismal 3-11
showing, taking the honor of low weekly total on the season and dropping
out of the playoff picture.

I'll update the web pages on Wednesday night.  Picks due on Friday

Nice job my Montross, hitting at 9-5 and taking the cash this week.  Monty
took over the top spot as the standings continue to rotate each week.
Pretty tight at the bottom as the last 5 spots are separated by 1 game.  BD
holds the final playoff spot this week based on a 1 point differential in
PVS.  Defending Champ Roxie continues to perform well, hitting for 8 wins
for the 3rd consecutive week and back in the thick of things.

No Reversal plays this week to report on.

Zip Zalapski put up the 2nd best weekly record this season, hitting for 11
wins and beating out a rejuvenated Constantino Rocca, who hit with 10.
Roxie, the defending champion, started the season with 2 consecutive weeks
of only 4 wins.   He now currently holds the longest streak of consecutive
weeks with 8 wins or better with 4 in a row and has edged out the BD for
the final playoff spot on the PVS statistic.  We noted only a few short
weeks ago that Roxie's PVS was in good shape and that it could be a factor
later in the season.  Montross faultered a bit this weekend, but continues
to look pretty comfortable in the #2 spot, just 3 back.  Esta put up an 8
spot after 4 weeks of missing the mark.  Carrier is looking for his second
championship this year after taking the PPII.

The Legend has only 1 week at 8 wins or better out of 6 weeks and continues
to play himself out of the playoffs.  I guess this cat just has other
things on his mind.  Bubba's chart has a pretty bad downtrend and continues
to struggle this year with the addition of the spreads.  As you remember,
Bubba was only the 3rd competitor to ever not pull in any cabbage in a
season last year.  BZ continues to struggle, hitting for 4 wins or less 2
out of the last 3 weeks and currently sits in the cellar.

For the second consecutive week, there are no reversal plays to report on.

Esta Carrier had the cash wrapped up on Sunday, hitting at 10-4.  BZer got
back on track, reverting back to the HOME-Team Offense and hitting at 9-5.
LL seems to have put a little more time and effort into his picks, hitting
at 9-5 and remaining 1 game out of a playoff spot.  Montross quietly
continues to stay in the upper ranks of the standings, hitting at 9-5 and
moving to within 2 of the Zipper.  Zalapski remained hot, hitting at 8-6
and bailing out with Le Bonne on Sunday to win some cash.  Rock's streak of
consecutive weeks with 8 wins was stapped at 4, however, Roxie remains in
the number 4 slot.  Bubba continues to struggle with the spreads, hitting
at 5-9 and dropping into the cellar once again.  BD Copson had a tough
stretch, 3-11 and falling 3 spots out of the playoff hunt.

Montross continues to stay hot and jumped into first place as Zippy
struggled.  Rock, BZer, and Montross all hit at 9-5, with BZer taking the
tie breaker on the over.  BZer scrapes a $5-spot from MM and Rock, while
the remaining $25 goes to the year end pott, which grows to $215.   BZer's
HOME Team offense has got the job done for a 2nd consecutive week and he
now sits 2 games out of a playoff spot.  LL stays withing striking
distance, hot on Roxie's tail, coming in a solid 8-6.  BD seems to be
spiraling a bit, hitting for only 3 and 4 wins in the last two weeks,
respectively.

Things tightened up a bit as the top three competitors all put up sub-500
records.  BD Copson knocked off Bubba to take the week and the cash with a
cover by Minnie on Monday night.  Bubba finally put up a solid week, but
the cash still won't come his way and now, past the halfway point of the
season, is in danger of a second consecutive non-cash-pulling season.  Rock
continues to remain hot as he has hit for 8 or more in 6 out of the last 7
weeks, coming charging back from early season struggles to only 2 back from
the lead.  At 2 back and with a comfortable lead in PVS, Rock looks in
prime position to make the playoffs and make a run at a 2nd consecutive NFL
Challenge.  BZer's home team offense performed well again, going 7-7, and
he remains 3 out of a playoff spot with his good buddy LL.  Pulling up the
rear, Esta and Montross hitting at 6-8, while the Zipper dropped another
slot to 3rd place, hitting for only 5 wins for the 2nd consecutive week.

Carry over remains at $215

LL took the week and the cabbage with a 9-5 showing, but more importantly
jumped over Esta and into the final playoff spot.  MM remains our most
solid capper, putting up another 8 win week and opening a 4 game cushion on
his closest competitor.  Zip recovered a bit and hit at 7-7, maintaining
the #3 spot.  BZer's HOMEteam offense hit at 7-7, however he has been
unable to crack into the top 4.  Rock, BD, and Bubba all came in at 6-8.
Our Mr. "I have all winners if I was betting" hit at 5-9 and fell out of
playoff contention.  It was Esta 3rd consecutive week at 6 wins or less.

BD grabbed the cash with a 10-6 showing and moved to within 2 games of a
playoff spot.    Rock hit at 9-7, what can you say the guy is good and the
defending champ has now solidified his place in the playoff hunt at 1 back
off the lead.   The rest of the pack was hitting around 50% except for Zip
Zalapski, who hit at 4-12 and fell out of the playoff picture.  Zip is the
latest member to spiral hitting for 5 games or less in 3 out of the last 4
weeks.   Playoff picture is really tight with 5 members currently fighting
for the last 2 playoff spots.

Reversalplays were 1-0 with a 1D play on DENVER (1D plays 8-8 on the season
now, ATS plays 3-0)

Is anybody as excited as me about this league..... Week 12 is complete and
we still have 6 competitors fighting for 2 playoff spots all within 3 games
of each other.  This could be the tightest finish yet.  Let's give a big
round of applause to Bubba Barbarini for breaking the curse and taking the
cash this week with a solid 10-6 showing.  Bubba was in great danger of
putting up 2 consecutive seasons without a payday.  More importantly, Bubba
has re-energized his shot at a playoff spot, just 2 back.  Montross and
Rock remain solid and have really locked down playoff spots, making for a 2
man race for regular season champion.  The rest of the boyz were mediocre
at best this week and we'll just have to wait and see who will get hot and
who will get cold as we make our final push to the playoffs.

Of the 6 players chasing playoff spots, here is a look at the PVS, which
most likely will be a dertiminant come week 17

Zip Zalapski bunny-hopped back into the playoffs with a solid 12-4 record
and took the cash for the week.  Bubba 2-Team remains hot after his first
win in 2 seasons last week, hitting at 11-5 and just missed cracking into
the playoff mix.  LL and Bubz are tied at 6 games back with LL taking the
final playoff spot on PVS of 181 vs 188.   Looks like Montross has put it
on cruise-control as he consistently hits for 8 wins or more (5 out of the
last 7 weeks) and begins to prepare for the playoffs.  BZer hit at 9-7 but
has been unable to move up in the standings, we wonder how long he'll stick
with the home-team offense.  Esta and Rock struggled this week hitting at
6-10.  Zip tried to make a move on the PVS this week, playing the low at 22
and got WALLUPED with a 43-39 final on Monday night.... pretty funny and
just goes to show how bad the Zipper is at over/unders.

Here are the latest PVS

Esta Carrier finally got hot after a tough stretch, hitting at 10-6 and
sitting 1 back of the playoffs.  Carrier also rebounded vs the man this
week and hit a nice buck in the woods this weekend.   With his 3rd win of
the season, Esta has guaranteed a positive cash NFL Challenge at the very
least.   Zip, Rock, BZ and BD all hit at 9-7.  BZer's HOME-Team offense
continues to perform well as he jumped back into the playoff picture in 4th
place.   Zalapski opened a bit of breathing room on the 3rd playoff spot
with a 3 game lead over the BZer.  BD has had a tough time making up ground
and sits 9 back.  MM remains rock solid in the top spot as he continually
hits right around the 8 win mark, going 8-8 this week.  LL got hurt this
weekend, slipping to 2 spots out of the playoffs after a 6-10 showing.
Bubba 2-Team also got hurt after 2 of his most solid weeks.  After a solid
push for the playoffs, Bubba now sits 2 out.  3 weeks to go and we're down
to the wire, still a great race for the final few playoff spots!!!  Good
luck!

The Legend stole a 5-spot from Bubba as he hit the Fish AND the over on the
Monday night game.  Carry-over grows to $245 as the two competitors
currently fighting for the last playoff spot, LL and Bubba, both hit at
10-6.  LL holds the playoff spot on PVS 218 to 251as Bubba got hurt on
Monday's high scoring affair.  Zippy kept pace with Montross at 9-7 as Zip
keeps his hopes alive to make a run at Montross and try for his 3rd
consecutive Regular Season Championship.  MM hit for his 4th consecutive
week at 8 or better and will try to tie LL's record of 5 weeks vs the
spread this upcoming weekend.  G.L. MM!  BZer's HOME-Team offense could
only hit at 7-9 and he remains a game out of the playoff picture.  BD
Copson also hit at 7-9 and is running out of time to have a chance at the
playoffs.  Constantino Rocca struggled at 6-10 and fell to third in the
standings, holding a 2 game advantage over LL/Bubz.  Constantino still has
hopes of becoming the first TF competitor to win back-to-back NFL Challenge
titles.  Esta Carrier also struggled at 6-10 and may now only be fighting
to stay out of the cellar.  Two weeks to go, good luck to all of those in
the playoff hunt!

1 reversal play to note.  1D play on NEW ORLEANS was a winner and takes the

Many new records have been created this week.  Esta-Fiesta keeps his
playoff hopes alive with a solid 11-5 showing, grabbing the cash for a
record 4th time this season by hitting on St. Louis (we need to confirm
this record with the statistics bureau).  LL, Zip and BD all hit at a solid
10-6 as Zip and LL try to solidify their playoff positions, BD sits 3 out
of the playoff race.  Another record we need to check is Zip Zalapski
putting up his 4th consecutive week with 9 wins or better (40-24 or a 62.5%
clip).  How bout a round of applause for Montross who tied LL's record of 5
consecutive weeks at or above 8 wins.  MM will try to break the record and
wrap up the regular season championship this week.  Roxie is in a bit of a
season-end slide, hitting for less than 8 wins 3 out of the last 4 weeks.
He narrowly holds the final playoff spot over Esta by one game.
Disappointing week 16 showing for BZer and Bubba, hitting at 5-11 and 4-12,
respectively, and essentially ending all hopes of a playoff birth.  BZer
and Bubba had made solid pushes over the last few weeks and must be
disappointed with this week's showing.

Should be quite an interesting final week.  Rock and Esta one game apart
with only a 8 point differential in PVS.  BD 3 out with a 12 point PVS
differential.  Zip Zalapski chasing Monty for the regular season
championship 2 back and a 3 point differential in PVS.  LL in 3rd and now
in the Bahamas, will he get his picks in?   Good Luck!

We touched on the "hot cappers" in our end-of-year write up and it stayed
the case in the Wild Card games.  LL and Esta finished up the season strong
while Zip and MM limped into the playoffs with a tough final week.  LL
jumped out to an early lead in the playoffs with a 3-1 record and a PVS of
21 points.  Esta kept pace on the record but will most likely need to take
some chances as his PVS ballooned to 43 (22 points off the lead).  Montross
sits one game back and has a PVS of 24 which keeps him in the running.  Zip
Zalapski fell apart in the playoffs for the 3rd consecutive year and will
need a Roxie-like comeback to have any shot at the championship.   Last
year Roxie was 2 back with 3 games to go and was still able to take the
championship.

Spreads will go up tonight....  picks due on Friday.  GL!

Current Standings (PVS)

     Esta (118)

-2  Montross (70)

Esta stripped the lead away from LL this weekend by going 2-1 vs LL on different picks.  Esta Fiesta has set the pace and now looks to close out his 2nd consecutive TF Group Major Championship.  Esta holds a 1 game lead over LL and Zip but is clearly at a disadvantage in the PVS standings (with a whopping 118).  Zip Zalapski kept his Championship hopes alive by hitting at 4-0 in the pool this weekend.  Both Zip and LL need to pick up one game against the Giant over the next 3.  The regular season champion is struggling in the playoffs for the 3rd consecutive season.  Montross hit at only 2-2 this weekend and now sits 2 back with 3 games to play.  MM is not out yet though as Constantino Rocca sat in the same situation last year when he made a miraculous come back to steal the championship.  Fortunately for MM, he sits in last place with the best PVS of the group.  The last 2 playoffs have been settled on PVS.

Spreads will be posted on Wednesday.

Current Standings
      Zip (122)
      Esta (193)
-2    LL (106)
-3    MM (104)

Zip Zalapski continues his push for his first NFL Challenge Championship
hitting at 2-0 this weekend and remains hot going 6-0 his last six after a
1-3 showing the first weekend.  Zip takes command of the tourney with a 71
point lead in PVS over Esta.  Zip essentailly locks up the Championship if
he can pick the same team as Esta.  Esta hit at 1-1 for the weekend and his
Low-PVS strategy didn't work out as both games went over the total.  LL and
MM were 0-2 and have been eliminated from the playoffs.  Both LL and MM
have the best PVS totals but were unable to make use of them.    Good luck
to the remaining 2 competitors.  Picks will be due the Friday before Super
Bowl.

Congrats to Esta Carrier on his 2nd consecutive Major Championship.  Esta
is half way to the unofficial Grand Slam (official Grand Salami is in the
same year).  Esta made a late season run to get into the playoffs and then
held off the Zipper with a late TD by the Phillies in the Super Bowl.  Zip
was on a 6-0 run in the playoffs and may have let his heart get in the way
by playing on the Pats in the Bowl.  LL and Montross rounded out an
exciting playoff session in 3rd and 4th, respectively.  Rock came in a
solid 5th, losing out on the playoffs in the final week.  BD takes 6th
place on PVS over Bubba and BZ's HOMETeam offense struggled down the
stretch to take the cellar.

Some very heated discussions during the Super Bowl on the current format of
the NFL Challenge.  Luck Laru has added a motion to the annual vote to
crown the regular season champ the Major winner.  I love the passion, you
can't buy that type of drive!!!

Another great season for all, see you next year!  March Madness is just a
month away!
