Avoid Being a Victim of Identity Theft:


1. Do not have your social security number printed on your checks or dirver license.

2. When ordering new checks have them delivered to your bank instead of your home address.

3. Keep a list/photocopy of all credit card information including telephone numbers of the customer service departments.

4. Shred pre-approved credit application, credit card receipts, and other financial information before throwing them in the trash.

5. Add your name to the name deletion list of the Direct Marketing Associations mail preference service and telephone preference used b the banks.

6. Remove your name from marketing lists to reduce the number of pre-approved credit applications you receive.

7. Monitor your credit report from all three credit reporting agencies, once a year check the report for inaccuracies or accounts that you did not open.

8. Guard your social security number.  It is key to your credit report, banking accounts, and it the prime target of the criminals.

9. Do not carry extra credit cards or other important identity documents except when needed.

10. Do not mail bill payments and checks from home.  They can be stolen from your mailbox and washed clean in chemicals.  Take them to the post office or other secured area.

11. Order your social security earnings and benefit statement once a year to check on fraud.

12. Examine the charges on your credit card statements before paying them.

13. Cancel in writing unused credit card accounts.

14. Never give your credit card number (not even the last 4 digits) or personal information over the phone unless you have initiated the call and you trust the company.
